Middle & High School Club Offerings 2011-2012
BASEBALL CLUB – This club is for those who enjoy the sport of baseball. The club will meet on Tuesday and Thursday at 3:30-5:30 through the month of October. We will concentrate on better learning baseball through games, practice and discussion. Sponsor: Coach Frazee (Open to grades 7-12)
BOARD GAME CLUB – This club is for anyone interested in playing or learning board games. Some of our favorites from past years have been Settlers of Catan, Blockus, Apples to Apples, Connect Four and others. We are certainly open to learning new games as well. We plan to play on Tuesdays immediately after school until 4:10 in G2. Sponsor: Mr. L. Martin (Open to grades 6-8 and older if you like)
BOYS BASKETBALL CLUB – This club will be offered in the fall and spring for boys in grades 9-12 as well as advanced 8th graders. Format will be to play basketball 1-2 times a week, mostly playing 5 v 5 games. Meeting days and times will vary, depending on availability of the gym. See Coach Bechler for a fall schedule. CHESS CLUB – This club consists of a group of students with an interest in the game of chess and improving their playing abilities. Depending on interest this could further lead to a chess tournament. Sponsor: Mr. Brenneman (Open to all abilities and grades 6-12).
COMFORTERS FOR MCC – Every year Mennonite Central Committee distributes thousands of comforters. The comforters are generally made from old denim jeans and the beautiful blankets are sent to people in need around the world, some to homeless persons in the U.S. It is not a problem for you to miss a meeting or two. We will meet during 1st. semester on Tuesdays, 3:15-3:45 in the FCS room Sponsor: Mrs. Bender (Open to grades 6-12)
CURRENT EVENTS CLUB - This club will meet over lunch on Thursday every other week and discuss a current issue. The group members will decide what we discuss at each meeting. Topics range from government, the environment, and business to sports, music, and pop culture. If you love keeping current with the world around you and love to debate issues, this club is for you! Sponsor: Mrs. Roth (Open to grades 9-12)
DOWNTOWN FRIDAYS CLUB - Each Friday there are special opportunities to explore Harrisonburg's downtown. There are art exhibits, music venues, dance, and theatre performances. We will visit Harrisonburg’s downtown on the first and third Friday's, beginning Oct. 7 at 4 pm. Sponsor: Mrs. Gautcher (Open to grades 6-12)
FLY TYING CLUB – Come learn the art and science of how to tie flies and how to catch fish. This club will meet in room 161 on Tuesdays beginning second semester. Sponsor: Mr. Good (Open to grades 6-12).
GIRL’S SOCCER CLUB - This club is designed for girls who are just looking for another excuse to kick a ball, talk soccer, and have fun with the game. We will meet primarily on Tuesdays from 3:00-3:30 for pick-up games, trying out new techniques, and just kicking around. There is a good chance we'll get together to watch some games or soccer movies. This will be a low pressure way to get to know other girls across the grades who love the game. THE GRATITUDE CLUB - In the club meetings we will discuss ways to thank and encourage family, friends, and faculty. We will also make simple cards and small gifts to give to those people we are especially thankful for or who need encouragement. We will meet in Room 151 every other Wednesday until 4:00. Sponsor: Mrs. Byer (Open to grades 6-12)
MATH COUNTS – Math Counts is a national organization of clubs that train for a competition at the regional, state and national levels. The program is open to all Middle School students, with the competition scheduled for sometime in the Spring. We will meet every other Wednesday in room 206 (Mr. Jesse Blosser's room) from 3:15 to 4:00 to work on problem solving strategies and fine-tuning our skills. The club is open to all Middle School students interested in challenging themselves in Math. Sponsor: Mr. J. Blosser (Open to grades 6-8)
MATH CLUB - If you like Math and are interested in fine tuning your problem solving skills, Math Club is right for you. After school every other Wednesday we will talk about how to solve certain types of problems and practice with previous VML problems. Following VML competitions we will talk about correct solutions and strategies used. Sponsor Mr. J. Blosser (open to grades 9-12)
MATH LEAGUE – The Virginia Mathematic League offers six problem solving contests for high school students each school year. The problems require creative approaches to unusual questions and vary from very easy to quite challenging. Participants eat lunch early and do the half hour contest during the regular lunch period once per month October through March. Sponsor: Mr. J. Blosser & Mrs. Stuckey (Open to grades 9-12).
OPEN ART ROOM CLUB - The art room will be open from 3-4 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday for students to explore art. We will work in a variety of media: painting, drawing, clay bowls, collage, paper mache, and stained glass. Limit to the first 15 students. Sponsor: Mrs. Gautcher (Open to grades 6-12).
RECYCLING CLUB – This club is for students who want to give back to their school community by organizing the school’s paper recycling. We will meet in Room 161 after school from 3:15 - 4:00 as needed, usually every other week. Sponsor: Mr. Good (Open to grades 6-12).
SET DESIGN & PAINTING CLUB – This is a club dedicated to painting each stage production at EMS. We will also attend one other drama/theatre event each semester to see how other schools design their stages. Sponsor: Mrs. Gautcher (Open to grades 6-12).
SOFTBALL CLUB – This club is for anyone wanting to learn or play the game of softball. We will work on knowing the game, hitting and fielding. We will have fun playing games and learning together. Meeting dates will be on Monday and Wednesday from 3:30-5:00. Sponsor: Coach Smiley (Open to grades 7-12)
SUNSHINE BAND CLUB - This club will play once a month after school on Tuesday, 3:00-3:30, and during lunch on Thursday, 12:10-12:25. Students who like to play and sing bluegrass music are invited to attend. Sponsors: Mr. E. Yoder & Mr. Buchanan (Open to grades 6-12)
TECHNOLOGY STUDENT ASSOCIATION (TSA) –The purpose of this club is to develop leadership skills and compete against other students from local and state- wide schools in a variety of contests. We will meet once or twice a month, probably during activity periods. We will attend Leadership rallies at JMU and go to the Valley Regional Fair and State competition in the spring. We may also participate in fund raisers, service opportunities, and field trips. (Level I is open to grades 6-8; Level II is open to grades 9-12) Sponsors: Mr. Brubaker & Mr. Buchanan.
