High School athletics: The Eastern Mennonite High School athletic department and coaching staff, in conjunction with parents, strive to develop our student athletes' abilities in the context of a positive team experience. These experiences contribute to the development of life values which are carried beyond the high school athletic arena. Important values of teamwork, self discipline and leadership are fostered in an environment committed to Christian education. Middle School athletics: At the Middle School level winning is not as important as skill development, proper technique and learning the rules of the particular sport. It is vital for participants to have fun and enjoy their experience to encourage future participation in the JV and varsity programs. Playing time is emphasized to expose the athletes to game situations which will further develop skills and knowledge of the sport. Specific Middle School teams open to sixth, seventh and eighth graders include volleyball and basketball. Additionally, seventh and eighth graders may participate at the Junior Varsity level and eighth graders may compete at the Varsity level. Boy’s sports are soccer (JV and varsity), cross country, basketball (JV and varsity), baseball (varsity), golf (varsity), soccer (JV and varsity), tennis (varsity), and track (JV and varsity). Offerings for girls are cross country (varsity), volleyball (JV and varsity), soccer (JV and varsity), tennis (varsity) and track (JV and varsity). Elementary School athletics: Elementary students participate in the Blue Ridge Area Elementary Athletic Association (BRAEAA). This is a group of mostly private elementary schools in our area who have come together to provide team competition in sports. Currently, this includes Basketball and Soccer. Teams consist of two groups, Kindergarten - 2nd grade teams and 3rd - 5th grade teams, which are combined girls and boys. The goals of this league are to focus on developing the basic skills of the games, to allow players to experience being part of a team, and to learn and demonstrate sportsmanship with teammates and competitors. |
