How many students are in a class?
Class size depends on grade.  6^th grade will have 18 or fewer in each section, while 7^th and 8^th grade is typically 20 or fewer.  There are usually 55-65 students in each high school grade.  The goal is for each class to have no more than 22 students.

Can I visit classes?
Yes, please do!  Students who want to learn more about EMS are invited to visit on a school day.  A current student from your grade will be your host during the school day/lunch.  You should make arrangements ahead of time by calling our Admissions Counselor Crystal Jackson at 236.6021 or by emailing her at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Do EMS students take the SOL tests?
No.  The classes required for a high school diploma are similar, but our students do not need to take the statewide SOL test K-12.  This allows teachers freedom and creativity in the classroom so that energies may focus on the art of teaching students, and in instilling problem solving and  critical thinking skills to best prepare students for life in and out of the classroom, instead of simply preparing them for a test.

Does EMHS have block scheduling?
No.  Eastern Mennonite has a seven period day.  A twenty minute chapel is a part of the daily schedule, as well as a forty minute lunch.

What percentage of graduates go to college?
About 85 percent of graduates go directly to college.  However, it is important to take into consideration that many of our graduating seniors choose to do mission and or service work immediately after high school before continuing their education.  We are proud that our seniors consider options for the greater good as they leave Eastern Mennonite School.

Does EMS have uniforms?
No, but students are asked to dress modestly and neatly.  If you would like to know more, you can request a handbook which contains the clothing code for students.

What extracurricular activities are available?
There are clubs, athletics, drama, and musical opportunities for students of all ages.  You can learn more by clicking on the categories that suit your interests.

Do EMS students take Bible classes?
Yes.  We are a Christian school, and students are required to take one semester of Bible class for every year that they are at EMS.

Do EMS students attend chapel?
Yes.  In grades 6-12 students and faculty gather daily for about 20 minutes.  Chapel is planned by a group of students, and has a variety of speakers and presentations.  In grades K-5, students have a time once a week called Gathering.

What if I need academic support?
EMS has tutoring support services available for students, as well as other support services that are in place to meet students’ needs.  All teachers work hard to provide accommodations and support for all of our students, including those with IEPS.  EMS is not, however, able to provide services for students with more significant challenges.  We would be happy to discuss options with you.

Is there financial aid available?
EMS is able to award limited financial aid based on family need.  Applications for financial aid are available from the Admissions Office or online from Family Financial Needs Assessment and must be completed by March 16.  All funds for financial aid come from donations to EMS from alumni, parents, churches, and friends of the school, so therefore the amount of aid awarded may vary from year to year.

Does EMS have certified teachers?
Yes, teachers at EMS are certified, and many have a Master's degree.

What percent of EMS students are Mennonite?
We welcome students from all faith backgrounds.  60% of EMS students attend a Mennonite Church, and the other 40% come from a variety of other faith traditions. EMS is sponsored by the Virginia Mennonite Conference of the Mennonite Church USA and supported by many other churches as well.
