The children came… help them get in!

March 13, 2019

Recent gifts to the Let the Children Come campaign have brought Eastern Mennonite School within $23,000 of their move-in goal to prepare a home for their K-5 students.

"We are so grateful for generous donors who took us in late February to within $55,000 of the goal. That gift inspired others, and now we are within $19,500," explained Paul Leaman, head of school.

In addition, a former board member - having heard of the two recent gifts -- stepped forward to commit the final $5,000 if the school raises the $19,500 needed by March 31 to fund renovation of the former Menno Media building with classrooms, art and music rooms, a library and a welcoming entrance for elementary.

With the gifts, pledges and encouragement, Leaman invites others to help the school reach its goal. "Every gift counts," he notes. Contact Paul Leaman, head of school, at 540-236-6012 or by email. Or, make gifts to the campaign directly online.

Building progress update as of March 11, 2019

(progress reports come weekly to staff by Mike Stoltzfus, director of business affairs)

New signage along Virginia Ave.

Many window openings have been enlarged to accommodate new windows.  Classrooms will  have lots of natural light.

The first floor is entirely framed in and the second floor is almost done. Exterior framing should be finished the week of March 11.

Holes cut in the lower level floor have been filled in with concrete, finishing the structural reinforcement of the shell of the original building.

Trumbo Electric, Blauch Brothers (mechanical and plumbing), and Liberty (sprinkler) are working together and being creative to keep the ceilings as high as possible to give the classrooms a large, open feel.

Site work has been done, including tree removal and preparing for the office and eventual gathering space on the west side of the building.

Up Next... Build a Bridge

When the move-in goal is complete, the school will turn its sights toward constructing a pedestrian bridge to connect the two sides of campus, a project necessary before students begin using the new building.

Elementary Move-In Goal Close to Being Met

March 05, 2019
By Andrea Wenger

Thanks to a recent  $100,000 commitment by long-time friends of EMS, the Let the Children Come campaign is within $55,000 of what’s needed to make the former MennoMedia building move-in ready for the school's elementary program. Classrooms, art and music rooms, a library, offices, and a welcoming entrance are part of the current renovation.

“This gift is meant as an encouragement to others,” says Paul Leaman, head of school. “The donors deeply believe in EMS’s mission and want to encourage others in this final push to meet the move-in goal.”

Construction update

Work is proceeding at a fast clip as the school transforms the former MennoMedia building into a child-centered, learning environment. Windows have been enlarged to let as much natural light into the building as possible. Interior concrete has been poured, creating two complete floors, ready for interior walls.  Electrical and plumbing trades has begun. And excavation has begun where new exterior stair towers will be installed on the west (Route 42) side of the building.

The gift comes at a crucial time to help the school in its final push toward move-in day. $3.68 million in gifts and pledges have brought the project this far, allowing for purchase of the property and preparations to bring an old building up to code.

“We are so grateful for the community support we have felt in this effort,” says Leaman. “We’ve felt the prayers and encouragement of the broader community and our school families. Now it is exciting to get close to the ‘finish line’ of the campaign to fund the renovation so our students and teachers can move in.”

Even as school administrators strive to gather gifts toward the final $55,000 for the move-in goal, elementary parents are planning an effort to build a bridge between the long-term middle and high school and the new elementary building, reports Leaman.  And, he continues, after the elementary school is moved in, "we’ll turn our sights toward the Gathering Space," an addition on the elementary building that will be essential to community learning and life together.

Your gifts welcome!
